The Journey towards Safe Roads in Romania
Brief::
Romania has the highest road traffic fatality rates in European Union. The objective: to reduce traffic fatalities, raise public awareness about road safety, and advocate for policy changes to improve road safety in Romania.
Solution:
The Road Safety Coalition (www.pentrusigurantarutiera.ro) was set up in 2023, bringing together government bodies, NGOs, businesses, and policymakers to develop evidence-based solutions. The coalition’s activities includes public debates, outdoor campaigns, and media engagement. These efforts aim to create a long-term road safety culture and influence legislative change.
Results:
The Road Safety Coalition has grown to include 36 organizations, representing government bodies, businesses, NGOs, and key industry players. Significant achievements includes the initiation of the draft bill for the “National Road Safety Week” (L482/2024), championed by over 40 MPs from various political parties. This legislative milestone, in its final legislative procedure, marks a key step towards road safety education in Romania. Public awareness efforts, including targeted outdoor campaigns and media coverage, reached nearly 2 million views, significantly impacting public perception. The coalition’s advocacy contributes to Romania’s improvement in road safety, with the country no longer leading the EU in traffic fatalities since 2023.
